Panaji: Churchill Brothers FC have moved to the north of Goa for the first time and will take on Rajasthan United FC in their I-League opener on November 15.
After playing their I-League matches at the Nehru Stadium in Fatorda and Tilak Maidan in Vasco, both in south Goa, Churchill Bros have now moved to the north and will play all their home games this season at the GMC Athletic Stadium in Bambolim.
The last two seasons saw the league being played inside a bio-secure bubble. All matches were played in Bengal. With Covid restrictions lifted, the I-League is once again a pan-India affair, as 12 clubs are set to play home and away at 13 different venues.
Churchill Bros, two-time I-League champions, have built a strong side with Spanish coach Antonio Rueda at the helm. They are looking to become champions and get promoted to the Indian Super League (ISL), as per the roadmap previously agreed by stakeholders.
The I-League kicks off at a Malappuram, a town where fans throng to the stands whenever any football match takes place. Defending champions Gokulam Kerala FC and last season’s runners-up Mohammedan Sporting Club play each other in the opening game on November 12.
“There’s a lot of excitement around this season’s I-League, with the league set to be held in the home and away format once again,” said AIFF secretary general Shaji Prabhakaran. “We have taken great care to ensure that around 80 per cent of the matches will be played under floodlights, and that goes to show how much development most of these venues have gone through.
“We are committed to add value to the I-league by improving broadcasting quality and overall product quality. We have to already start working for the next season by actively involving clubs and our marketing partners to improve value proposition. The new management is serious about a league structure that will drive football in India to a new level.”
