Scopus (the world’s largest abstract and citation database of scientific literature) indexed research output for UPES was 1170 in 2021. Until September 2022, it was already 1500+ and is likely to cross 2100 by the end of this year. The university has grown 12 times in research output in the last seven years.

UPES faculty members are an illustrious set, with over 700 academicians from world-renowned institutions such as Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Stanford, UC Berkeley, Yale, MIT, Cornell, Columbia, Imperial College London, IISc, IITs, IIMs, National University of Singapore, University of Tokyo, etc. Among them are a Nobel Prize nominee and a Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Awardee, besides Rhodes, Fulbright, Commonwealth, Chevening, DAAD, Eiffel and Erasmus scholars. Twenty UPES faculty members are among the top 2% of researchers worldwide, and eight others are among highly-cited researchers in their respective disciplines, according to studies published by Stanford University researchers and by Clarivate, respectively.
Dr. Manish Kumar, a professor at the School of Engineering, has been recognised as India’s number one and the world’s fourth-best environment expert for his published articles, as per an analysis by Expertscape. Dr. Nalin Mehta, Dean, School of Modern Media, recently presented his book ‘The New BJP’ to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The book has been making waves on Amazon’s list of bestselling non-fiction books. The book has been listed among the all-time top 10 books in the genre, along with the late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s autobiography.
One of the most highly-cited Indian scientists, Prof. Gautam Radhakrishna Desiraju, has joined UPES as a Distinguished Professor and Member of the Vice Chancellor’s Strategic Advisory Council. The award-winning academician has authored around 479 research papers and a total of 512 publications, as given in the Web of Science.
Professor Phani Tetali, Dean, UPES School of Design, is an animator, animation educator, designer, cartoonist and illustrator with more than 30 years of experience. Until recently, he was the Head of IDC School of Design, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. The school has also onboarded some of the finest academic leaders, such as Prof. Debkumar Chakrabarti (Ex-IIT Guwahati), Prof. Pradyumna Vyas (Ex-Director, National Institute of Design), Prof. Nina Sabnani (Ex-IIT Bombay IDC), and Prof. Amit Ray (Ex-IIT Kanpur) as distinguished professors and advisors. Dr. Snigdha Misra from Cornell University and Dr. Dhruv Kumar, PhD in Cellular, Molecular and Industrial Biology from the University of Bologna, Italy, are among the esteemed faculty members at UPES School of Health Sciences and Technology.
Setting new benchmarks in higher education
UPES is a private university in India looking to hire full-time 1000 PhD scholars – 250 every year for the next four years – beginning this year. These scholars will be provided with fellowships similar to University Grants Commission (UGC) and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) fellowships through the university’s internal resources.
UPES’ relentless approach to crafting the best learning experience for students and nurturing a culture of research and innovation has ensured its status as the highest-ranked university in Uttarakhand as per NIRF India Rankings 2022. It has also secured the 97th rank in the coveted list of top 100 institutions in the country, alongside prestigious institutions such as IITs and IIMs.
In the University Category, too, UPES moved up several notches, from the 100th spot last year to 65th this year. The rank for individual schools also saw a remarkable improvement, with the School of Engineering moving from 91 to 61, the School of Business from 46 to 41, and the School of Law from 25 to 21.
