As per the police reports, Suri, the president of Shiv Sena (Taksali) along with other leaders was staging a dharna when some unidentified assailant opened fire at him. The accused has been arrested and the weapon used in the crime seized.
“Sudhir Suri was shot outside Gopal Mandir, Amritsar during some agitation. He sustained bullet injuries and was rushed to hospital and died. Accused has been arrested, his weapons recovered,” Amritsar police commissioner Arun Pal Singh said.
Suri was in the hit list of several gangsters for a long time and was provided security by the government with around eight Punjab Police personnel being attached with him, they said.
As the news of the attack on Suri spread, tension gripped the area. Enraged by the incident, his supporters broke window panes of shops and attacked some vehicles.
Leaders of various Hindu organisations staged protests outside the private hospital where Suri was taken for treatment and also blocked the road for some time.
The police commissioner said that the control room received the message that Suri was attacked between 3.30pm and 4pm. Since he had bullet injuries so he was immediately shifted to the hospital.
“It is too early to say that it was an act of terrorism, we are investigating the incident with every angle,” he said.
