HYDERABAD: Six persons, including five students of a madrassa, died of drowning after they slipped into a water body in Jawaharnagar on Saturday noon. As the tragedy unfolded, divers were pressed into service to retrieve the bodies. The five madrassa students were in the 12-14 age-group and studied at an Islamic institution in Amberpet. They had come to Jawaharnagar to attend a house-warming ceremony of their teacher in Malkaram locality.
After the function got over, the children went to the nearby Erraguntacheruvu and waded deep into the water body. Soon, they struggled to stay afloat as none of them knew swimming. As they screamed and flailed for help, their teacher jumped into the water to rescue the kids, but he too was drowned. Eyewitnesses claimed all six were sucked into the water within minutes and could not be saved. The deceased were identified as Yahiya Shahed, 25, and five children – Sohel,12, Jafar,12, Mohammed Rehan,14, Syed Ismail,12, Ayan,10. Later, police informed parents of the 5 children and a police complaint was lodged.
