MEERUT: An inter-faith love affair ended in tragedy on Wednesday when a 19-year-old college-going girl hanged herself to death hours after her family called her boyfriend, 20, who was also her classmate, to their house, allegedly thrashed him mercilessly following which he died in a hospital in Dehradun.
The incident happened at Islampur locality of Rampur Maniharan region in UP’s Saharanpur district. The teenager, Tannu Saini, was a BSc student as was the youth, Zia-Ur-Rehman.
Police said they are “yet to receive any complaint from either families”, adding that appropriate action would be taken after the postmortem report of the dead man arrives.
The girl’s autopsy report mentions death due to hanging. No FIR has been filed, said police.
Soon after news of the deaths spread, local markets remained shut fearing communal unrest as the couple belonged to different faiths. “Police force has been deployed. Probe is on and action will be taken accordingly,” said Saharanpur SSP Vipin Tada.
Zia’s father, Ayub Ahmad, who runs a grocery shop, said, “The girl’s family called my son to their house on Tuesday. They brutally thrashed him and left him outside the house. After someone informed us, we rushed to the spot and saw him lying on the ground. We took him to a hospital, from where he was referred to a higher centre in Dehradun, where he died on Wednesday.”
Praveen Saini, a neighbour, said, “It’s tragic. There should be an impartial investigation.”
